Al Ahmadiya school Dubai (from wikitravel)
Al Ahmadiya school in Dubai
Al Ahmadiya school, Dubai’s first school, was established in 1912 by a rich pearl merchant named Sheikh Ahmed bin Dalmouk with the intention of getting semi formal education to children in various subjects encompassing literature, sciences and religion. This school was the first of its kind when students were grouped in accordance with their age and assigned to classrooms housed in a small building behind the Sheikh’s house which over a period of time underwent further expansion.
Before the establishment of Al Ahmadiya School, education in Dubai was the responsibility of religious men named ‘Al-Muttawa’ who used to teach children in homes with the main focus being on the Holy Koran, writing, mathematics and Arabic Calligraphy. This all-boys school reflected a pioneering effort in itself and paved the way for the introduction of formal education system in 1956 when then prohibited subjects like English, sociology and science were added to the curriculum. Since this led to a dramatic increase in the number of students, the school had to close down at its original location and moved elsewhere. This old building of Al Ahmadiya School now serves as a museum of education and that time.
