Things to see in Abu Dhabi for the long termer

There are a heap of other things that you could make time for, if you are in Abu Dhabi for longer. Here are our favourites:

The Al Maqtaa Fort – this is a traditional fort built around 1800 and now completely renovated. You will see it if you are going through the Al Maqtaa bridge and are on the way to the Shagri-La Souk. (+971 2 444 0444)

Women’s Union and Handicraft Centre – The ladies of Abu Dhabi create traditional crafts that you watch them make and can also buy. You can even get henna painted on your hands by the local Bedouin. They’re all sitting on the floor and you feel as if you are eavesdropping on their coffee morning! It’s open in the morning during the week and is at the end of Karamah St on the corner of 24th and 9th.  Men are welcome, but shouldn’t stand too close. It’s free and the museum is Dhs 5. They’ll do your henna for free! (+971 2 447 6645)

Cultural Foundation – Currently being renovated and upgraded to be the museum of Abu Dhabi, this will be the central point of culture for Abu Dhabi

The Oldest Building in Abu Dhabi -  Al Hosn Palace (Qasr al Hosn)  – This fort which used to house the president is currently being renovated to house relics and some historical artefacts. It’s the oldest building in Abu Dhabi at around 215 years old and is located at the corner of Hamdan St and Khalid bin Waleed St. When it reopens it will be the “Trafalgar Square” of the UAE.( +971 2 6215300)

Boat Making at Al Bateen Dhow Yard – This is where they make the traditional boats, that have been used for centuries. Located past the Central Bank, if you want to take a peak

The Massive Coffee Pot – you will probably pass Al Ittihad square at some point in your trip as it is close to the Central Market, where you will see a massive canon and huge coffee pot. A little random. Al Ittihad Square
