Visit the Falcon Hospital in Abu Dhabi

The Falcon Hospital in Abu Dhabi is one of the really different things you can do in Abu Dhabi – and is great fun for the kids to see – and is especially amazing for the twitchers visiting Abu Dhabi. Depending on how interested you are, there are two tours you can take, one taking two hours, the other taking three, but including a mezze of food.

Although this is not one of the first things that come to mind when visiting Abu Dhabi, do consider visiting.  It’s an opportunity to really get close up to the birds with the real falcon experts. Falconry is an  integral part of the heritage of Abu Dhabi which is why it spearheaded this hospital in 1999 to be the first public falcon hospital in the world. 5000 birds are treated every year and falcon fanatics fly in especially to get up close and personal.

The tour involves:

• The museum – art of falcon heritage and history back to the pastime of Bedouin life
• The hospital – this is supposedly one of the leading falcon hospitals in the world – sometimes you even get to see falcons on the operating theatre
• Picture Taking – get the glove on and have the falcons perch on your arm and take as many pictures as you want.
• Free flying – the highlight of the tour – watch they birds zoom and swoop!
• Lunch (optional) – a high end meal of Arabic food, where you can sit and eat majlis style

• Even though there are tours scheduled for 10am and 2pm, you need to call and book in advance or book on their website at www.falconhospital.com or on the number below.
• There is nothing quite like this in the world, and with the Emirati devotion to the bird, this is done superbly. This is a hidden gem of a tour!

How long – 2-3 hours

Location  – Falcon Hospital - Go straight down Airport Road, pass the airport and take a right towards Dubai/Sweihan. Take a right 3 miles after you pass over the Sweihan bridge, take a right again, and you will see the signs.
