TYPICAL SALARIES IN THE UAE

Go directly to the spreadsheet

One of the most common questions we get asked concern the salaries in Dubai, and what is a typical salary. This is a very difficult question to answer, because employers differ in their approaches to salary, even within industry. Salaries are not as lucrative as they once were, when the UAE was considered a hardship posting, but if you aim to save money, it is possible to do so. More and more people come to Dubai for the lifestyle, as opposed to medium term savings, but what is clear is that, in recent years, the salary rises have not increased at the same level as the cost of living.

Some jobs, especially within the multinationals and within the finance and oil and gas arena remain above par compared to other sectors in the UAE. However, for non core positions, ie support type positions, salaries are sometimes governed by what people are prepared to accept rather than what the job to pay. With expectations of individuals varying, the salary level is based on certain nationalities real saving in their home country. So, if someone is working in a position to save money back home, and that can buy luxury, for a few years a hard toil, this is something that some individuals are prepared to do. On the other hand, employers sometimes look for people just good enough to take a position so that they can pay at a lower level. This makes it difficult for someone who brings good quality experience to the table, driving their own salary down. While this situation is not always the case, it may be a stumbling block if you thought you could achieve a very high salary in Dubai.

It can be seen, therefore, why it is difficult to really say what a typical salary in Dubai actually is. However, what we have down is scour through a number of the job adverts during one week in 2006 to provide you with typical advertised jobs and their associated salaries. What you should bear in mind is that these salaries are not necessarily indicative of the job market, per se, since much recruitment occurs outside these usual channels. So, it is worth taking these salaries with a pinch of salt.

We tried to gain a broad cross section of positions during the one week window and simply placed these within a spreadsheet, with relevant information, if available. This included: job title, industry, location, salary, additional benefits if mentioned, language preference, nationality, qualification, and experience required.

For reference: figures quoted are in AED per month, which is the general method of quoting salaries in the UAE.

The Spreadsheet
The spreadsheet is not intended to assist companies in composing compensation schemes, but is merely an information source for those looking at salaries in the UAE, to give a general indication of what salary could be obtained for a certain position.
