How safe is Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

There is so much bad press about the Middle East and Arabs that you would think there is a huge amount of crime going on. In actual fact, the UAE is probably one of the safest places in the world. With many people here to make more money than they can at home to give their families a better life, no-one wants to jeopardise their income generating potential.  So, crime is pretty low. Obviously, things do happen, and some does get hidden and is not reported, but, as long as you play safe, you’re pretty likely to be safe. People walk the streets late at night with their young kids – that’s how safe it is. The one word of warning concerns driving. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are notorious for car accidents. Abu Dhabi was recently listed as having the highest car accident rate in the world. That’s not a record they like to have, but it is all to do with reckless driving of hugely powerful cars.  The most fatal roads are the Sheikh Zayed Road, and the Emirates road in Dubai. Also, be aware that cars don’t necessarily always stop at zebra crossings as you may be used to.
