 LIFE IN DUBAI
FAQs

I am British married to a UAE National. He wants to take a 2nd wife? Does he need my permission?

No, he does not need your permission under Sharia Law. As long as he can look after you both there, he is allowed to take up to 4 wives.

I am a student in Dubai. If I cancel my visa, will I be banned from working here?

You won't get banned. Banning usually occurs where employees terminate their contracts or in civil cases, not in the case of students.

I currently hold loans in France and want to move to Dubai. Is this allowed?

This is irrelevant to obtaining a visa in Dubai. There is no minimum requirement of cash required to come to the UAE.

I am coming to Abu Dhabi to live. What is the best way to meet new people?

Join a health club or gym, and get down the beach - you're sure to meet new people there. You could join the British Club in Al Mina. And there are number of societies that you could join up to, depending on your preference. Most people's social life initially starts among their work colleagues.

What kind of clothing is appropriate for women in the office? Do I have to cover up?

As long as you dress appropriately for the fact that you are living within an Islamic culture, you should be fine. Don't show too much flesh and don't dress too tight- a long skirt or trousers with a top is probably a good way to start and then you can judge what the general consensus is regarding clothing. You will see many people wearing t-shirts or short sleeved shirts in the malls. As long as you don't dress too sleazy there will be no problem . Bear in mind that some emirates have stricter laws. For example, men are not permitted to wear shorts in Sharjah.

I have an offer in Dubai, but am told that it is illegal to cohabit? Is this true?

This is against Sharia Law, so you are technically committing a criminal offense. However, many people do cohabit, and so long as you are discreet and potentially have a room each, you could get away it without any questions asked. A solution would be to get married!

Am passing through Abu Dhabi for a couple of nights on work. What is the club scene like?

Although, not as alive as Dubai, there are a fair number of bars and clubs. You should check out The Lab at the Beach Rotana, AM:PM at the Intercontinental, Sax at Le Royal Meridian and potentially Rock Bottom at the Capital Hotel.

Where is the Peppermint Club?

Peppermint is usually held on a Friday night at one of the conference rooms at the Fairmont Hotel. They play house music.

Which are the best restaurants for good Indian food in Mina Bazaar?

I would recommend Rangoli or Pachooli for some quality cheap nosh. 10dhs will get you a long way! The surroundings are not amazing, but the food is pretty decent.

Is it possible to buy alcohol from off licenses?

You can obtain a liquor license if you are non-Muslim - the amount of the allowance is related to your salary. Your PRO should be able to sort this out for you. Alcohol is also available at restaurants, bars and clubs which are associated to hotels.

How far and how much does it cost to get to Dubai from Abu Dhabi?

It approximately takes 1.5 hours by car. You can take a private car with driver for about 200hs with Fastlimo, or a shared taxi for 50dhs per person (you will have to wait until the car fills up with 4 people) or a bus for 15 to 35 dhs. The bus takes slightly longer and both the bus and shared taxi will take you to the bus station in Dubai where you can get another taxi to wherever you want to go.

How hot does it actually get in the summer months?

July and August are particularly hot and humid. Humidity reaches 100% and temperatures during the day sometimes hit close to 50 degrees, which is almost unbearable for more than a few minutes. Thankfully most places have air conditioning.

I heard that someone was put in jail for having Nurofen. Is that true?

I presume that you are referring to the case of Tracy Wilkinson. I can't comment on what she had in her system, but I do know that Codeine is a banned substance here. So Nurofen is not banned, but Nurofen Plus is banned. Any pain killers not sold here presumably thus contain banned substances. The UAE is harsh on 'drug smugglers', and those bringing in banned substances, whether this is 'in their system' or in their luggage. If you are unsure whether any of your medicines is illegal, I would check with your embassy or your doctor. To be absolutely sure, you should check the UAE Ministry of Health’s website. Click on Pharmacists, then Medicines & Pharmacy, then Drug Formulary for the list of permitted medicines. At the very least, make sure that you have a copy of your prescription, just in case.
