JOBS IN DUBAI

I work as a teaching assistant at one of the schools in Abu Dhabi. Can I take another part time job in the evening?
Legally, you cannot take a second job unless you have express permission from the Ministry of Labour and your sponsor also agrees. However, there are many people in the UAE who moonlight to supplement their incomes.
I am just about to start work and my employer said that he is obliged to keep my passport. I am concerned that this will inhibit my freedom. Can they do this?
The employer does not have this right. It used to apply some time back but no more. You can refuse this, but he may take back the offer. If you do give it to him and demand it back, say to go on holiday, then your employer must give it back. If you start and keep the passport, the employer can not demand it off you. You can file a civil action in this regard. Contact a lawyer to do so.
I resigned from my software programmer job, after 3 months and have now been banned. Is this legal?
From September 2005, the ban no longer affects the private sector. Previous to this, some professions are exempted from the 6 month ban on employment, such as doctors and lawyers, but unfortunately, yours is not, and since you resigned, rather than being terminated you are banned from working for this period.
How long are probation periods usually in the UAE?
This really depends on the company. We have seen companies that offer 2 weeks to a month, right up those that impose 6 months, sometimes extendable to a maximum of a year. We would suspect that the norm for mid level positions is 3 months. However, check the penalties, should you resign or be fired during that time.
I am currently in the UK and would dearly love to move to continue my career in the UAE. Can you advise with regard to the best agencies or approach to do this?
If you check within our archives, you will see a newsletter entitled Get a Job which will give you a list of the good agencies and approach on how to tackle the job search.
I have been given an offer to work for a bank in Dubai which is paying AED 10,000, plus tickets. What exactly does tickets include?
This all depends, and you should be very specific about your options. Firstly, if you are married and with children, you should look into whether these are offered. There is usually a company policy with this but most reputable companies do offer this, up to 3 children. Secondly, you need to be aware of whether they are paying for actual tickets to your point of origin (ie your home country) or a certain rate based on time of season, or just a fixed rate. These rates are usually based on IATA. Some companies may just give you an amount, no matter where you are
traveling. And some don't offer anything, or one ticket every two years. Be very clear what you are receiving and make sure it is stated within your contract.
