Saadiyat Island - Abu Dhabi’s $27bn cultural development that will boast the Guggenheim, Louvre, various museums, beaches with leisure and entertainment facilities, championship golf course and luxury apartments and will also be home to the world's largest hydrogen-generated power plant

Sajjada - This is the Arabic term for prayer mat and usually comforts the worshipper whilst in prostrations of prayer or salat. Prayer mats can vary in design. Worshippers pray in the direction of Mecca and some prayer mats come equipped with a compass that points not to North but to Mecca.

Salary - Of course, this is what you get paid, but in Dubai, salaries vary significantly, and one person's bounty can seem extremely meager to another. This is due to the varying demographics and different types of expatriates who come to the UAE in search of work

Salat - This is the act of prayer amongst all muslims. Salat is performed five times a day at dawn, midday, afternoon and in the evening. Specific timings are dictated by the sun. In Islamic countries, the call to prayer can be heard through loudspeakers in the mosques. Before Salat begins, the worshipper must first cleanse themselves by washing their face, hands and feet. A sajjada or prayer mat can be used and is placed in the direction of the Kaba shrine in Mecca.

Sambousek - A triangle shaped warm pastry filled with meat, cheese or vegetables, similar to what other's call samosa in east asia.

Secretdubai - The legend of all bloggers in the UAE. Secretdubai upset and amused people of all creed. Having been banned and unbanned, the blog has been blocked by the censors, although numerous still access the blog which is still kept up to date.

Shark Island - A popular diving site near Khorfakkan harbor. The island also has a great beach for sunbathing. Many keen divers rate this as a fantastic place for under water photography. The island was given it’s name due to the frequent shark visitors during the winter months.

Shawarma - A traditional and very popular snack. Grilled slices of delicately spiced lamb or chicken cooked on a spit, mixed with salad and sauce and rolled inside a pocket of Arabic bread. Sold all over the UAE, and is considered the fast food of the Middle East!

Sheikh - This is the Arabic title used to describe the head of a tribe or clan

Sheikha - The female equivalent for Sheikh.

Shela - A common piece of attire worn by UAE national women. A sheer piece of fabric loosely wrapped over the female’s head in order to cover most of the hair and neck. Nowadays the fabrics are printed or have subtle embroidery and look very glamorous. The outfit is made complete with the Abaya.

Al Shindaga Tunnel - This is the only underwater crossing for vehicles between Deira and Bur Dubai. In addition to this tunnel there are four other crossings connecting the two areas between the Creek , Al Maktoum bridge being the first built in Dubai.

Shisha - Argile, hubbly bubbly, shisha – the cultural tradition of choice, whether you are smoking apple, apricot or he legend that is grape shisha, enjoy it in moderation

Ski Dubai - The largest indoor ski slope in the world, and its located in the desert

Snoopy Island - Another popular diving site along the east coast of UAE. It’s given it’s name due to the shape similarity to the cartoon character. Day passes at the Sandy Beach hotel are available for purchase for non guests.

Sorouh - Property Developer in Abu Dhabi Souk/ Gold Souk - A Souk is defined as a market, open or covered where serious bartering can be exercised. Dubai has a multitude of these ranging from gold, spice, clothes and carpets. They are spread across the Deira, Bur Dubai and Karama areas. In Abu Dhabi, Madinat Zayed is the popular covered gold area along with Hamdan Steet. The Souks are usually open between 9am and 1pm and 4pm and 9pm with Fridays having the morning part off too.

Sulaimani Tea - A popular alternative to English Breakfast. Sulaimani is very common in the UAE. It’s basically tea with no milk and but heaps of sugar. You can opt for no sugar and just say “La Sakkar”. Fresh mint is sometimes added for flavour.

Superlative - Dubai has taken the world by storm by aiming at reaching the superlative of everything it does: the world's largest, tallest, biggest, lavish, most expensive
