Dar Al Dhyafa - Dar Al Dhyafa Al Arabia is a traditional type hotel located within Sharjah’s heritage area. The hotel, which is basically an inn, is one of the historic places of resting, from an era far away from the large hotels that currently exist in the UAE.

Dates - This traditional delicacy is usually a hallmark of hospitality throughout the Arab world. It is common to have a few dates with Arabic coffee and is very popular to eat when breaking the fast during Ramadan. The date palm belongs to the palm family and the tree can grow up to about 30 meters high and in a good harvest can produce about 800 dates. It is believed the highest producer of dates is Saudi Arabia producing about 600,000 tonnes, UAE has about 45million date palm trees and Oman about 18 million.

Deira - Deira is the area of Dubai north of Dubai creek. Off the coast, the Palm Deira is being built. On the mainland, you might be in Deira for the mall, of which Deira City Centre is quite popular. Al rigga street, in the heart of Deira, is a great place for eateries. Deira is most famous for all the souks, from the textile souk and spice souk to the world famous gold souk.

Desalination - To keep the UAE so green, a huge amount of dealination of the sea water is required.

Desert Safari - One of the must do trips if you are visiting the UAE for the first time. Drive into the desert and then get driven, seemingly crazily up and down the huge dunes. You fear for your life, but this is professional stuff. A great day out, usually concluded with sandsurfing, shisha and shawarma under the stars.

Dhow - A Dhow is a traditional Arab sailing ship used to transport goods and still in operation today.

Dirham - The basic unit of currency in the United Arab Emirates is the Dirham. 1 Dirham is equal to 100 fils. The Dirham is pegged to the US dollar but there is always discussion about this being changed.

Dial a delivery – to your office desk! - We think the UAE is one of the few places that allow staff to order their lunch and get it physically delivered to their office desk. However more and more companies are realizing the security risks involved (especially in banks) and limiting takeaway staff to report to the reception desk. So get your lazy bum in the lift and collect your grub at the front door!

Dubai Creek - Is a natural inlet which splits the centre of Dubai city in half, one side being Deira Dubai and the other Bur Dubai. The most popular and scenic way to cross the other side is to take an abra which is an ancient wooden boat (or water taxi) or via the Al Shindaga Tunnel and a pedestrian tunnel under the estuary of the Dubai Creek. Dotted along the Creek, you will see the ancient Dhows which were the popular means of transporting freight such as dates and fish to India and East Africa up until the 1960s. Today, the Dubai Dhow Cruise offers a one off charge to include an evening of entertainment, dinner and drinks whilst soaking in the delightful views of Dubai along the Creek. Recent plans for extending the Creek have been given the green light and will stretch the Creek all around Bur Dubai into the Persian Gulf. This extension is part of the Business Bay project and is anticipated for completion in 2010.

DUBAL - Dubai Aluminium

Dune Bashing - This is one of the unique experiences you must try in the deserts of the Middle East. It is advisable to use one of the many tour companies to arrange this excursion rather than venturing out on your own unless you are with someone who has a reliable four wheel drive and has good bearings in the desert! Nevertheless, equip yourself with plenty of water as this will be a very bumpy ride indeed.

Dusit Dubai - One of the five star hotels in Dubai with a Thai theme and located on Sheikh Zayed Road.
