Abra - Is a traditional boat made of wood and can house up to 20 passengers at a time. It is used to taxi people up and down Dubai Creek and Bur Dubai in 10 minute journeys. The charge in 2007 was quoted as 1 dirham per crossing per person or 100 dirhams per hour for exclusive hire.
Abaya - An over garment which complements the Shela. All UAE national females are expected to wear this over their clothes when out of the privacy of their homes. The fabric is usually black with beautiful intricate designs and quite light and sheer so can also be worn comfortably in the scorching hot months.
Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation - The Cultural foundation was built in 1981 with the aim of raising cultural awareness and creativity through relevant programmes and events such as workshops in painting, pottery and photography and various exhibitions. The Cultural Foundation is situated in Abu Dhabi city and also includes the National Library, a large exhibition hall, four medium sized halls and an open air amphitheatre
Abu Dhabi Investment Council - Abu Dhabi Investment Council, established in 2006 to invest domestically and regionally. Owns Etihad Airways and big chunks of NBAD and ADCB and also owns 99% of ADIC
Al Majarrah Souq - A modern but traditional souk situated in the emirate of Sharjah just along Sharjah creek. It has about 50 shops offering textiles, clothes, perfumes and shoes. Popular with the local shoppers.
Al Midfa House - The UAE’s only wind tower is situated in Sharjah at the Majlis of Ibrahim Mohammed al Midfa located between Souq Al Arsah and the waterfront.
Al Ain - Al Ain or “The Garden City” is the second most important city within Abu Dhabi, and holds special status as it was the birthplace of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, UAE’s first president. It lies about 150 km east of Abu Dhabi, about an hour and a half along a modernised highway into the mainland and also borders with the sultanate of Oman. There are seven natural oases which bring a refreshing appearance to the area which is in contrast to Abu Dhabi city.
A larger spread of UAE nationals reside in Al Ain compared to rest of the country.
Recently, more focus is going into ways of developing Al Ain because of it’s archaeological and historical heritage. Its current attractions include Al Ain National Museum and the Al Ain Palace Museum, Al Ain Zoo, Al Ain Fun City and Jebel Hafeet. Some future attractions may include development of the Jebel Hafeet area to include a Mubruza Health Resort, a shopping mall in the Al Mudheef District and a natural park. The Movenpick Hotel Group also plans to open a resort in the city area scheduled for end of 2010.
Al Ain Palace Museum - This was originally, the residence of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan built in 1937. The late president of the UAE wanted to make the palace a cultural landmark which would mark the current Al Ain with its past, therefore had it renovated in 1998. It became the Al Ain Palace Museum comprising of beautiful interiors such as an internal court, majlis rooms, family residences, service areas all restored with furniture dating to the specific period in which it was occupied.
After two years of work, it was fully retored to became Al Ain Palace Museum with immaculate walls, internal court, majlis, guard buildings, family residence, service areas. The museum is located on Al Ain Street, in the heart of the city on the perimeter of the Al Ain Oasis.
Al Aqah Beach - Located in the emirate of Fujairah, this resort area has a beautiful backdrop of the Hajar mountains, excellent diving areas and some historical sites. A few well known hotel chains can be found including Le Meridien and the Iberotel. Al Aqah is about a 90min drive from Dubai.
