ARAB VERSUS WESTERN PERSPECTIVES


Bridging the divide between cultures is based upon understanding the perspectives of each other. It is not a matter of who is right or wrong, but respecting each others' beliefs and way of life. Religion is an obvious difference, but religion aside, we have provided a simple table so that in understanding a new culture, you are able to understand the thought process relevant to the other.

Considered the foremost, where the father is patriarchal

Part of life, but considered more periphery

Very important - honour will be protected at all costs
Not as important, but can be in extreme circumstances
SHAME
Avoided as much as possible, especially in relation to family, where gossip, insults and criticism taken to heart
Live by the sword, die by the sword
TIME
Very relaxed
Very structured, deadlines are always of paramount importance
RELIGION
Central to life
Personal choice and not usually discussed or associated with individuals
SOCIETY
The Family, tribe or clan is important
The individual is important, especially with regard to rights
GOVERNMENT
Somewhat secular, with a focus on religion
The purpose is to protect rights, and is thus focuses on adherence
SOCIETAL FOCUS
Age and Wisdom
Youth and Beauty
WEALTH
Respected
Respected


In addition, the Arab world view is based on a number of concepts:

Atomism - whereby Arabs are considered to see events as isolated incidents rather than the bigger picture
Faith - all things are controlled by the will of Allah
Wish - conflict of need for modernity versus tradition
Justice - justice and equality is important amongst all Muslims
Family - Family pride is more important than individual honour
Paranoia - considered by the west, but the Arab is just suspicious of interest and intent to ensure the best possible outcome for their own people, country and land.
